As a photographer, I’m always exploring how layering subject matter can transform ordinary objects and scenes into imagery that transcends the ordinary. In this series, bones are utilized to to that end, in some cases directly identifiable while in others, resulting in imagery whereby the subject matter is disguised entirely.

Drawn to things natural, I chose to photograph bones, utilizing those found and acquired. Bones represent the structure that sustains life, yet also the last remaining physical evidence of a living thing’s existence, and I sought to create imagery from these organic objects that evokes the beauty of the abstraction of form.

I created these works through a combination of layering the bones themselves and layering photographically. I choose to use in-camera multiple exposures, repositioning both objects and camera, to create a single image, using editing tools only for enhancements, not compositing.
